Jupiler Pro League: Matchday 28 Preview

Jupiler Pro League

Following Anderlecht’s 2-1 victory over Club Brugge, it’s a two-horse race at the Jupiler Pro League summit. Eight points separate league leaders Union from second-place Anderlecht, with third-place Club Brugge 12 points adrift of the front runners.

We’ve previewed a huge weekend of fixtures, picking out some potential winners based on the latest Pro League betting odds.

Cercle Brugge vs KV Mechelen

We’re kicking things off at the Jan Breydel Stadion where fifth-place Cercle Brugge host Mechelen. Brugge are in fine form having won three of their previous four games, and they have lost just once in seven. Despite their strong recent performances, they are only in the top six on goal difference, with a defeat likely to be costly in the race for Championship Playoff football.

KV Mechelen have found a purple patch themselves and are undefeated in seven matches in 2024. They have now won back-to-back games, beating Antwerp 1-0 and Kortrijk 3-0, ahead of their trip to Bruges. It should be a close affair, but one that Brugge’s Ahoueke Denkey could well be the difference in. The Togan has scored six goals in his last four appearances, taking his Jupiler Pro League tally to 22 in 26 matche.

Cercle Brugge to win – 1.81

Leuven vs Union-Saint Gilloise

Union keep on plugging away at the top of the division, securing win after win to maintain their lead over Anderlecht. It was a 2-1 home win against Standard Liege last time out, with Gustaf Nilsson converting a penalty, followed by a Dennis Eckert strike just minutes later. Union’s away form is second to none in the Jupiler Pro League. They have won 30 points from 13 away games, six more than the next-best Anderlecht.

In contrast, Leuven are hovering outside the Relegation Playoffs by just one point. Only three teams have won fewer points on home soil than Leuven as they prepare for another tough test against the leaders. This has been a relatively one-sided fixture in the past couple of years. Union were 5-1 victors earlier this campaign, making it four consecutive wins against Leuven.

Union Saint-Gilloise to win – 1.51

Anderlecht vs Eupen

Anderlecht made it four wins in a row last weekend against Club Brugge. After having two first-half goals disallowed, Anderlecht had to rally from 1-0 down at half-time, eventually emerging 2-1 winners thanks to an equalizer from Luis Vazquez and a late winner from young Ecuadorian Nilson Angulo. The hosts are in a rich vein of form and have not tasted defeat at home since matchday 34 last season.

Eupen likely won’t put up too much of a fight this weekend. They have lost five successive matches without scoring a goal. They are now just three points above bottom of the division Kortrijk, five points behind safety.

Anderlecht to win – 1.32
