Women’s Euro 2025: Spain vs Portugal Preview

Football Predictions

World champions Spain get their Women’s European Championship campaign underway on Thursday evening with a match against Portugal.

La Roja are rightly the pre-tournament favourites and with so many world-class players in the ranks, they will certainly take some stopping in Switzerland.

And with Portugal yet to get near the upper echelons of the women’s international game, Spain may very well make a huge statement in their Matchday 1 fixture.

Below is a full match preview for the Women’s Euro 2025 clash, featuring sports betting online tips for your football bets.

Spain vs Portugal Preview

Spain are on a run of five consecutive victories in all competitions, following up a 2-1 win over England in the Nations League with a 3-1 victory against Japan in a friendly match.

As for Portugal, they are five games without a triumph, drawing 0-0 with Nigeria in their warm-up contest after suffering a 3-0 home defeat to Belgium on Matchday 6 of the Nations League.

Coincidentally, these two sides came face-to-face in the aforementioned Nations League tournament – and Spain really were the dominant force over the course of the two fixtures.

The 2023 World Cup winners followed up a 4-2 win away from home with a 7-1 victory in front of their own fans, with Barcelona duo Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas each netting braces.

Ballon d’Or holder Bonmati is actually a doubt for this match after only recently being discharged from hospital with illness, with Spain now likely looking to preserve her for the latter stages of the tournament.

Furthermore, the Spanish have enough firepower to beat any team on the planet, even with the brilliant Bonmati absent from the squad!

Spain vs Portugal Odds

*All odds are subject to change

Spain are massive favourites to claim the win here on Matchday 1 at a price of just 1.07. Portugal are at odds of 15.00 to claim an unlikely victory, while the draw is 8.50.

Spain vs Portugal Betting Tips

Alexia Putellas to score anytime @ 2.20

With Bonmati potentially absent from the squad, more of the attacking play should flow through the magnificent Putellas, a former Ballon d’Or winner. She netted 16 goals in 24 league matches for Barcelona in 2024-25 and has a fantastic international record, with 34 goals in 130 appearances.

Spain to score over 3.5 goals @ 2.21

Spain scored at least four goals in their two previous matches against Portugal and also recorded a 5-1 victory in Belgium on May 30. So this selection looks like a pretty safe bet to us.

Both teams to score – Yes @ 2.37

But while Spain should cruise to victory, we expect Portugal to score – as they did in each of the Nations League meetings. The world champions have not kept a clean sheet in their last eight matches across all competitions, a run stretching back to November 2024.
