Ukraine were fancied to get off to an extremely strong start based on the variety of talent available to them. However, after failing to beat Romania, their hopes of carrying on to the tournament’s knockout stage rest on their clash with Belgium. It is not what fans hoped for but with the same points as Belgium going into the game, maybe facing the group favourites is not the worst case scenario. Ukraine’s opponents are fancied to go deep into the competition with an outside chance of winning, so the weight of expectation is crushing and this is something Ukraine can capitalise on. Belgium’s defence has also not been immune to conceding, something that the dynamic Ukrainian offence can look to exploit. Should they want to take the victory, they will need star men Mykhailo Mudryk and Artem Dovbyk to be on top form. Belgium’s loss to Slovakia will also be heartening for Ukraine after they themselves beat Slovakia in what has been an utterly crazy group.
It was widely accepted before the start of the Euros that Belgium would cruise through this group with ease and maybe the squad shared this opinion, which offers an explanation for their complacency so far. Lacklustre and disorganised, the Belgians have not got off to the start they wanted, however, that is not to say their form will not pick up. But in their way stands a plucky Ukraine team intent on sending them packing. Belgium have had significant problems in front of goal, with front man Romelu Lukaku having three strikes chalked off by VAR, enough to make him the tournament’s top scorer if they had counted. Belgium have at least consistently created chances due to the efforts of captain Kevin De Bruyne and his supporting cast of Premier League regulars such as Jeremy Doku and Leandro Trossard.
