Ukraine vs Belgium Preview

The less said about Belgium’s Nations League group campaign, the better.

After beating Israel 3-1 on Matchday 1, the Belgians side went on a wretched run under the leadership of Domenico Tedesco, losing four of the last five.

Belgium finished third in the group as a result, behind France and Italy and only above Israel on goal difference, which is why they are in the play-offs under a new boss in Rudi Garcia.

Ukraine just about made it to this stage thanks to a 2-1 win in Albania on Matchday 6, a result that followed a disappointing 1-1 draw in Georgia.

Despite finishing second, the Ukrainians won only two of their group fixtures, while suffering a home loss to Albania and a 3-2 defeat to eventual winners Czech Republic.

So while Belgium are nowhere near the force they were a few years back, Garcia’s men should fancy their chances of victory over two legs and avoiding demotion.

And the new Red Devils boss has also been handed a major boost by the return of world-class Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who walked out of the camp in June 2023 after a row with former manager Tedesco.

Ukraine vs Belgium Betting Tips

Both teams to score – Yes @ 1.94

Given Ukraine are the home side in the first leg, this seems like a pretty safe bet to us. In the last three matches the Ukrainians have played in the Nations League, both teams have found the back of the net.

Over 2.5 goals in the match @ 2.04

It is no secret that Belgium have struggled to score of late, netting just once in the last three Nations League matches. But with such quality in the attacking ranks, that has to change sooner rather than later. And Ukraine are more than capable of scoring at least once, a feat they achieved in all six of their group matches.

Belgium winning margin – 2 goals @ 4.90

Without question the riskiest selection, given Belgium’s recent form in the Nations League. But we just fancy Garcia’s new-look Red Devils to turn on the style in the first leg of the play-offs, perhaps claiming victory by a 3-1 scoreline.
