Jupiler Pro League 23/24: Matchday 2 Preview

Despite leading the football odds to lift the trophy, Club Brugge opened up the new Jupiler Pro League campaign with a disappointing draw. In contrast, Genk came flying out the blocks with a 4-0 win over RWDM and have taken an early lead at the top. We’ve previewed matchday 2 and picked out three standout games.

Standard Liege vs Union Saint-Gilloise

Union Saint-Gilloise will continue their pursuit of a first league title since the 1930s away in Liege this weekend. They opened up their campaign with a convincing 2-0 win against Anderlecht but face another tricky test on the road. Union will take confidence from their first game. They kept a clean sheet against a strong Anderlecht attack, and Dennis Eckert Ayensa continued his adjustment to Belgian football with his first goal of the season.

There won’t be many punters backing St. Liege after they fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of St. Truiden on matchday 1. It is too early to make any rash predictions, but Liege don’t look to have bought in sufficient reinforcements to bolster their chances of qualifying for Europe this season.

Union Saint-Gilloise to win – 2.11

KV Mechelen vs Gent

Gent were one of the standout performers on Jupiler Pro League matchday 1. Yes, they might have conceded twice against a fairly average Kortrijk side, however, their blistering attack was on full display. Thus far, Gent have managed to keep hold of both Hugo Cuypers and Gift Orban – the pair were both on the scoresheet, with 21-year-old Orban grabbing the eventual winner.

Mechelen won’t be brushed aside too easily. The hosts picked up a 1-1 draw with Club Brugge last weekend, and still possess plenty of talent in their ranks. We think they’ll struggle against a Gent side on the rise, but they should have a solid season.

Gent to win – 1.82

Westerlo vs Club Brugge

Westerlo were the surprise package last Jupiler Pro League campaign. We’re backing them to impress yet again this season, but if there was one concern, it’s with their defence. They leaked too many goals last season and kick off this new campaign with a 2-2 draw against Eupen (hardly the league’s most potent attack).

It is surely going to click at some point for Club Brugge. They have brought in some promising players, including Brazilian 22-year-old Igor Thiago, who got off to the perfect start with a goal on his debut. Looking at Brugge’s squad there is just too much quality to ignore, and we think they will pick up their first three points on matchday 2.

Club Brugge to win – 1.93
