The 2025/2026 Jupiler Pro League football season lived up to all expectations.
With a thrilling title race, a fierce battle for European places and standout individual performances, the season concluded with Club Brugge being crowned champions following a particularly hard-fought play-off round.
While we await the World Cup and Belgium’s entry into the fray, here is a round-up and some reactions at the end of what was another thrilling Pro League season.
A battle between Club Brugge and USG
For much of the season, it was Union Saint-Gilloise who seemed to hold the cards.
Solid as a unit, consistent and as aggressive as ever in their pressing, the Brussels side topped the table for a long time.
But as is often the case in Belgium, it all came down to the Champions’ Play-Offs.
With more experience in handling big games, Club Brugge stepped up at the decisive moment to overtake Union and secure another national title.
This triumph holds a special significance for the Blauw en Zwart, as it allows the club to add a second star above its crest, symbolising the 20 Belgian league titles won throughout their illustrious history.
A true club icon, Hans Vanaken relished this latest triumph: “A title is always special. With this second star added above the crest, it makes it even more special. Seven titles in eleven seasons for me is incredible. When I signed for the Club, that was the goal. But I wouldn’t have thought I’d have seven in 11 seasons.”
Union Saint-Gilloise came so close
Despite the disappointment in the end, Union Saint-Gilloise’s season remains remarkable. The Brussels club has firmly established itself among the country’s top teams.
Long-time leaders, USG simply ran out of luck at the worst possible moment, letting the title and direct qualification for the Champions League slip away.
The club’s CEO, Philippe Bormans, was keen to highlight the quality of the campaign: “It’s true that we were one point short of qualifying for the Champions League and that the title was decided in the play-offs, where we had a bit of bad luck. Last year, everything went our way; this year it was a bit different. But I think we can really be proud of what we’ve achieved.”
A hard-fought play-off race for Europe
Behind the season’s two main contenders, several other clubs also made their mark.
Anderlecht regained some stability by finishing in the top four, whilst Genk and Gent had more inconsistent seasons.
As Union have already won the Belgian Cup by beating Anderlecht in the final, the European spot linked to that competition goes to the third-placed team: STVV, who were the revelation of the season.
Christos Tzolis named Player of the Season
On an individual level, one of the season’s standout performers was Christos Tzolis, who finished with 17 goals and 23 asssist – ridiculous numbers!
The Club Brugge winger produced a string of decisive performances in the play-off round – and was duly honoured at the Pro League Awards by being named Player of the Season with 22% of the vote.
Visibly moved by the honour, the Greek said: “It really means a lot when your teammates and opponents vote for you, as well as the coaches. I want to thank everyone who voted for me. It means I’ve done a good job this season. And for me, this is the individual award that matters most.”
