Jupiler Pro League: Top Performing Teams

Antwerp

Where better to start than with the champions, who overcame a three-point regular season deficit to snatch glory on the final day of the campaign. Antwerp’s defence in particular deserves special recognition. With just 34 goals conceded in 40 matches, they were by far the best defensive unit in the country. Toby Alderweireld returned to his boyhood club, acting as a rock in the heart of their defence and scoring the all-important goal to seal the title.

Westerlo

In their first season back in the top flight in five seasons, Westerlo went on to achieve their highest finish since 2009. They were one of the teams to watch all season, scoring as many goals as Club Brugge in the regular season, but also conceding the most in the top half. They will need some defensive reinforcements if they are to mount a serious challenge for a place in Europe next season, but they have certainly provided a solid foundation from which to build.

Jupiler Pro League: Who Had a Season to Forget?

Club Brugge

The champions never even looked remotely like claiming a fourth consecutive title. A fourth-place finish is their lowest in over a decade, which will simply not be accepted given the talent throughout their squad. They have a lot of work to do between now and the start of the 2023/24 campaign, but we have no doubt they will come back stronger.

Anderlecht

Anderlecht are another team that never really got going. If two incredible seasons and back-to-back third place finishes under Vincent Kompany, they failed to adequately adapt. Finishing 11th marks their worst league finish in over 60 years, with a +3 goal difference also a glaring sign of their poor performance throughout the campaign.

Waregem

A dreadful season finally ended in relegation for Waregem, bringing an end to a long run in the first division, which included European football. There is every chance they bounce back up straight away, but 2022/23 was certainly one to forget for the Waregem faithful.

Ones-to-Watch in 2023/34

Gent

There was a lot to like about Gent this season, especially toward the back end of the campaign. Despite going into the Conference League play-offs just one point clear of Standard Liege, they ended up topping that group by eight points. Their 44 goals conceded ranked them as the second-best defence in the top eight, while their 81 goals scored was bettered only by Genk. If they can keep hold of top talents such as Hugo Cuypers and Gift Orban, there is every chance they can push on for a top four finish next season.
