Athletic Bilbao to beat Fenerbahce @ 3.13
Athletic are rampant at the moment, unbeaten in the Europa League and fourth in La Liga with only a six-point gap to leaders Barcelona. They are experiencing a resurgence that fans and neutrals are thrilled to see, with one of Europe’s elite returning to prominence. And the Europa League is the perfect stage to show the world that they are to be taken very, very seriously.
Standing in their way this week will be Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce. Second in the Turkish Super Lig and only two points from automatic qualification in Europe, they will be determined to power into the top eight. But with their form and the players available (notably Spanish wonder-kid Nico Williams), we think Athletic come away with all the points.
Tottenham Hotspur to Beat Rangers @ 2.03
Another meeting of two of Europe’s top-tier clubs occurs in Glasgow, with a lot riding on the result of this historic clash. Visitors Spurs are currently in a very poor run of form, losing three of their last five and winning just once. As such, there are doubts being raised over the capability of Australian manager Ange Postecoglou. However, in Europe they have been fairly decent overall, failing to pick up points only once and winning three of five fixtures.
Whether this will be enough to keep the boss in his job is yet to be seen, but it does pose a significant threat for eighth-placed Rangers. Seemingly out of any title chase due to an 11-point gap to leaders Celtic, Rangers are fully focused on the Europa League. Level on points with Spurs, they won’t be intimidated by the visit of the Londoners. But on this occasion, despite their shaky form, we think the quality in the Tottenham squad should be enough for them to take the win.
Lazio to beat Ajax @ 2.90
Matchday 6 continues to deliver nothing but top-quality European clashes, as current leaders Lazio travel to Amsterdam to take on sixth-placed Ajax. In a game that could have serious implications for the look of the top of the table, both teams will not want to take a backwards step in this one.
Lazio have had some huge Europa League victories thus far, as well as playing well domestically. They are coming off the back of a weekend win over Serie A leaders Napoli and won’t be intimidated by any opponent in this competition. Ajax are doing well in Europe but their Eredivisie struggles make us lean towards the Italians.
Manchester United to beat Viktoria Plzen @ 1.58
New Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim suffered his second defeat in charge of his new club at the weekend and will be keen to continue to win over United fans with a strong performance in Europe. They make the trip to Czechia to take on Viktoria Plzen in a game that a win for either side could see them rise into the automatic qualification spots.
Both teams are unbeaten so far in the competition and will want to extend that streak. Despite United being fairly convincing favourites, this could be one of the more thrilling games of the round, as Viktoria should not be taken lightly. But even though we are sure their performance will be spirited, United simply have too much quality not to leave with all of the points.
