The Europa League is back, and Genk are flying the flag for Belgian football in the 2025-26 knockout stage.

Genk vs Freiburg Preview
Genk’s form of late really has been inconsistent, despite edging past Dinamo Zagreb in the previous round.
A 3-1 away victory in that tie was deservedly praised, but the 3-3 draw back in Belgium highlighted many of the frailties impacting Hayen’s side since the turn of the year.
Genk suffered a 2-1 loss at Jupiler Pro League champions Union Saint-Gilloise last weekend, which followed a 3-0 victory over Gent.
However, Genk’s top-flight fixture prior to the success vs Gent was an absolute horror show, as Hayen’s side lost 3-0 at home to Standard Liege.
A place in the Championship Round is now looking doubtful, but this represents a chance to perhaps inspire confidence and regain form – which Freiburg are also looking to achieve.
The German team’s 2-0 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt was followed by last Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Bayer Leverkusen, making it just one win in the last four Bundesliga matches.
Freiburg sit eighth in the division at the time of writing, with as many wins to their names as losses (nine).
Mediocrity has been the name of the game for both of these teams across the vast majority of the 2025-26 campaign, so this is a pretty hard tie to call – which is evidenced in the pre-match odds.
Interestingly, this will be the first-ever competitive meeting between Freiburg and Genk, with the latter last facing a German opponent way back in 2013, when they lost 3-1 on aggregate to Stuttgart in the last 16 of the Europa League.
