Genk have one foot in the quarter-finals of the 2025-26 Europa League after last week’s 1-0 victory over Freiburg at the Cegeka Arena.

Genk followed up the 1-0 first-leg victory with another 1-0 win on the weekend, this time over high-flying STVV in the Pro League.
Hayen’s men have now won each of the last three home matches by an aggregate score of 5-0, and their previous away match in this competition was a 3-1 triumph at Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb.
In stark contrast, Freiburg fell to another 1-0 defeat on the weekend, with Union Berlin leaving the Europa-Park-Stadion with three precious Bundesliga points.
The German outfit are now down to eighth in the top-flight table with more losses (10) to their name than wins (9).
So this is a huge match for Freiburg, as early Europa League elimination would really heap pressure on the shoulders of manager Julian Schuster.
As for Genk, this is perhaps only the second-biggest match of their week ahead of the international break.
Sunday’s game away at La Louviere – their last of the regular season – will decide whether Hayen’s men qualify for the Pro League’s Championship Round, as they currently trail sixth-placed Gent by just one point.
With only three days between the two clashes, Hayen will have to keep player freshness at the forefront of his mind – which could play into Freiburg’s hands.
