France vs Netherlands
Undoubtedly the standout tie of the international break, World Cup runners-up France will look to get their campaign off to the perfect start against the Netherlands in Paris. The hosts may have suffered heartbreak in Qatar, but we’re expecting them to be firm favourites to win their third European Championship title.
The Netherlands were dumped out of the World Cup by eventual winners Argentina, putting up a serious fight prior to their quarter-final exit. They will be full of confidence heading to Stade de France, but we’re not convinced they have the firepower to compete. The teams are fairly well-matched bar one player. Unfortunately for the Dutch, that one player is probably the best in the world, Kylian Mbappe. He is having an incredible season with PSG and will likely be the difference-maker.
France to win – 1.82
Croatia vs Wales
Next up in our football predictions is Croatia, who were beaten by Argentina in the World Cup semi-final. Every time a major competition rolls around, you expect Croatia to struggle, but every time they seem to defy the odds. They have all the experience and know-how to successfully navigate a straightforward Euro 2024 group, beginning with Wales in Split.
After failing to win in Qatar, the Welsh head to Croatia without a win in eight matches. So often they relied on the individual brilliance of Gareth Bale, and it remains to be seen how they will fare following his retirement. The Dragons will always fight but there is a lack of quality throughout that Croatia will capitalise on.
Croatia to win – 1.54
Kazakhstan vs Denmark
Denmark were perhaps the most disappointing team at the World Cup. But that’s not stopping us from slotting them in our football predictions. It was only last year we were talking about them as dark horses after they beat Austria and France twice in the Nations League. They are a touch light up front but should still have more than enough to claim all three points.
It’s tough to know what you’ll get from a nation like Kazakhstan. They put together impressive victories over Slovakia in the Nations League but were hammered 8-0 by France just months prior. Either way, there’s not enough there to suggest they will cause the Danes too many issues.
Denmark to win to nil – 1.87
England vs Ukraine
Ukraine are a typically strong defensive unit – they kept four clean sheets in their six Nations League games last year. However, they face an entirely different prospect when they travel to take on England at Wembley.
The Euro 2020 runners-up were narrowly beaten by France in the World Cup quarter-final and tend to cruise through their qualification campaigns. The Three Lions have lost just once on home soil in over two years and will be heavy favourites to dominate when Ukraine come to town.
