Union Saint-Gilloise vs Newcastle Preview

After beating Westerlo 2-0 at home on the weekend, USG have a commanding six-point lead over Club Brugge at the top of the Jupiler Pro League.

Pocognoli’s team have won seven of nine matches in the Belgian top flight (including all their home games), scoring 19 goals and conceding only four.

USG are a formidable side these days, evidenced further by their deserved 3-1 triumph at PSV Eindhoven on Matchday 1 of this competition.

It was a Champions League debut to remember for the best team in Belgium right now, and Newcastle will find the going anything but easy at the Stade Joseph Marien later this evening.

The Magpies were beaten 2-1 by Barcelona at St James’ Park two weeks ago and since then, Eddie Howe’s men have continued to struggle in the Premier League.

Last Sunday, Newcastle were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal, with the Gunners scoring two late goals through Mikel Merino and Gabriel Magalhaes.

That result means the Magpies have won just one top-flight match all season, scoring only four times in the process.

Alexander Isak’s departure is clearly an issue right now, with Nick Woltemade still adjusting to life on Tyneside and Yoane Wissa yet to feature for the club due to injury.

It really is a big night for both teams. A victory for USG would put them in a great position to qualify for the play-offs at a minimum, while a Newcastle win may be the spark to finally ignite their season.

Union Saint-Gilloise vs Newcastle Odds

*All odds are subject to change

Union Saint-Gilloise vs Newcastle Betting Tips

Player to score or assist – Promise David @ 2.63

Canadian striker David has scored in each of USG’s last three matches across all competitions, netting from the penalty spot in the win vs PSV two weeks ago. The giant forward has all the attributes to test Newcastle’s back-line, as Viktor Gyokeres did for Arsenal on the weekend.

Total goals – Under 2.5 @ 1.97

As previously mentioned, Newcastle are struggling to score, while matches at USG’s stadium have not been goal-fests of late. Each of the last two games have seen just two scored, with USG beating both Anderlecht and Westerlo by a 2-0 scoreline. So we expect a tight, low-scoring affair in Brussels, perhaps with one goal deciding the outcome.

Bruno Guimaraes to commit over 1.5 fouls @ 1.80

Guimaraes is currently averaging over two fouls per game in the Premier League, so we are a little surprised at just how good the odds are here!
