UEFA Nations League Fixtures Preview: Netherlands vs Belgium
The stage is set at the Johan Cruijff Arena for one of the biggest matches of the international break. We’ve favoured Netherlands in our UEFA Nations League preview, but both sides will come into this tie in strong form.
The hosts look set to top their group and are quietly emerging as solid betting option for the 2022 World Cup. Their home record is exceptional – they have lost once in their last 16 – and they will be slight favourites to overcome a Belgium side that has faltered somewhat on the road in recent months.
The visitors have won only once in their last five away games, drawing games you would expect them to win against the likes of Wales and Ireland. Roberto Martinez is having to oversee the transition of an ageing squad, but is yet to strike a balance that would see them challenge in Qatar later this year.
The last time these two met, Netherlands ran away 4-1 winners in Brussels after a dominant display. However, that was the first time they had beaten Belgium since 1997 in a World Cup qualifier. Six of the nine games since have ended all-square, with the Red Devils emerging victorious in the other two.
UEFA Nations League Fixtures Preview: Key Players
The main man for the Netherlands will be Memphis Depay. The 28-year-old winger is their top goalscorer in the competition and picked up his first domestic goal of the season for Barcelona at the weekend. Another player to watch for the hosts is Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old is an incredibly versatile forward and was linked with many top European clubs over the summer. He has already registered eight goals and six assists in seven games for PSV this campaign, and he’ll be looking to continue that form on international duty.
Martinez likes to vary his selection on a game-by-game basis, but the two players to watch for Belgium will be Kevin De Bruyne and Charles de Ketelaere. The former needs no explaining, but the latter has all the qualities to become a world class player. De Ketelaere is still adjusting to the Serie A after sealing a major move from Club Brugge, but he will almost certainly be in this Belgium squad for the next decade.
Netherlands vs Belgium Betting Tips
Tie with goals
Five of the last nine meetings between these nations have ended in score draws. Belgium may not have set the world alight in recent times, but they are always difficult to beat. It should be closer than the reverse fixture.
Netherlands win and both to score
The hosts do look to have a slight advantage based on how they have performed of late. They are full of confidence, and although they might struggle to keep Belgium out at one end, we fancy their chances of outscoring them at the other.
Cody Gakpo to score at anytime
Gakpo is in scintillating form for his club and there is every chance he starts in this massive game. He has looked unplayable in the Eredivisie and we’re backing him to showcase that form on the international stage.
