RWD Molenbeek vs Genk
Genk’s squad has remained surprisingly intact given the amount of promising quality throughout. They have so far managed to hang on to the likes of Joseph Paintsil and Mike Tresor, giving them a huge boost ahead of their opening Jupiler Pro League fixture. They take on the newly promoted RWDM, who secured promotion to the top flight with a win over Anderlecht U23s on the final day of last season.
Although they boast some standout talent – namely top goalscorer Mickael Biron – we can’t see them getting one over on Genk. There will be a few opening day nerves and they will need to adjust to the higher quality of the first division. Given the number of goals Genk were netting last campaign, we expect them to beat RWDM, and wouldn’t be too surprised to see over 3.5 goals.
Genk to win – 1.99
Antwerp vs Cercle Brugge
Antwerp kick off their title defence against last season’s sixth-place finishers Cercle Brugge. It is a tough fixture to start the campaign, especially given Cercle Brugge lost just once in six in the European play-offs. However, Antwerp don’t lost too often at home. They had the division’s second-best home record in the last regular season, with 11 goals conceded in 17 home games the best defensive record.
Cercle Brugge didn’t fare so well on the road last season, and it ended up being their home form that secured them a play-off spot. They collected 31 points from 17 home games, in stark contrast to 19 points in 17 away matches. It’s never an easy fixture against Cercle Brugge, but we like the look of a strong start to the season for the champions.
Antwerp to win – 1.83
Club Brugge vs KV Mechelen
Club Brugge will be looking to get their hands back on the trophy after a disappointing Jupiler Pro League 2022/23 campaign. They get things underway at the Jan Breydel Stadion against a Mechelen side that finished 13th last season. The visitors never really looked like being relegated, but didn’t threaten a European play-off spot either.
After a successful transfer window, Club Brugge may well be back stronger than ever. They have added a number of promising prospects to an already elite squad. Not only do we think they will be back in the top four, it’s highly likely they’ll be battling the likes of Union Saint-Gilloise and Antwerp for the title.
Club Brugge to win – 1.46
