Jupiler Pro League: Anderlecht Season Preview
Last season’s 11th place finish was Anderlecht’s worst in over 20 years. It is the first time in a long time that they lost more games than they won in the league, and fans will be hoping for a huge reaction.
Given they are Belgium’s most successful team – with 34 league titles – we expect them to bounce back sooner rather than later. However, there is an awful lot of work to do based on the performances of last season, and significant reinforcements will be required if they are to get back to competing at the top of the division.
Despite last season’s catastrophic finish, only five teams are ahead of them in the odds to win the league; Gent, Union Saint-Gilloise, Genk, Antwerp and Club Brugge. For all of their perceived struggles, the bookie are expecting them to bounce back.
And so are we. They have already made signings that will massively strengthen their squad, with a forward line that could grace any team in the division. But it does remain to be seen how they will deal without goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, after the 20-year-old swapped Belgium for England in his €20 million move to Brighton. Anderlecht have also parted ways with Kristoffer Olsson, who has left for FC Midtjylland after a successful loan spell, as well as Lior Rafaelov and Islam Slimani, both who have left on free transfers.
Anderlecht: Key Players
The addition of Danish forward Kasper Dolberg is an astute one. The 25-year-old has graced some of Europe’s top divisions with massive clubs such as Ajax, Nice, Sevilla, and Hoffenheim. As well as scoring 45 goals in 119 games for Ajax and 24 goals in 85 games for Nice, Dolberg has excelled on the international stage, scoring once every four games for Denmark.
His elite proven goalscoring will be paired with Benito Raman, who has scored plenty of goals across Europe himself. The strike partnership will be pivotal in firing Anderlecht up the league table toward a spot in the top four.
Jupiler Pro League: Anderlecht Season Predictions
We do expect Anderlecht to improve massively from last season. However, we can’t quite see them keeping pace with the four frontrunners, who we believe are Club Brugge, Genk, Antwerp and Union Saint-Gilloise.
They should push these close for a top-four spot for large portions of the season, but they may just tail off toward the back end of the campaign. Our prediction is a sixth-place finish, just behind the improving Gent. However, they could shock a few and would be a good outside shot to go all the way in the Belgian Cup.
